Exterior Lighting Fixtures – Have You Been Led Up the Garden Path Before?

Exterior lighting fixtures aren't just about making your home and garden look better on the outside; they have a number of practical, and security uses, too. Read our article to find out more.

Exterior lighting fixtures have come a long way over the years. There used to be a time where houses looked the same, for the most part, and that meant that the majority of outdoor lighting fixtures for home exteriors were the same, too. Fortunately, we’re not living in such a bland world anymore, when it comes to the exteriors of our homes, that is.

People are making more of their outdoor spaces than they were in the past. That’s not to say that the kids didn’t use to go out to play in them in the past, but they’re now treat more like an extra room than they are an area where you can get rid of the kids for a while. The new generations of exterior lighting, and exterior lighting fixtures, are helping to drive that revolution.

So what sort of exterior lighting fixtures are going to help you to brighten up your new extra room? Much of it’s going to come down to the type of outdoor space that you have, and exactly how you want to utilize it i.e. if you have a decked seating area, and it’s partially covered, would you want to use outdoor ceiling lights, or do you want to have lower set lighting that may give those late night gatherings a more intimate feel?

If you have a smaller area at the back of your garden, for something like a hot tub, then you could light your way to it with a number of low energy, eco friendly, in ground led up lights. Or, as an alternative, and to carry on with the eco theme; how about some solar powered lights to guide you on your way? The garden is starting to feel more magical already, isn’t it?

Of course, exterior lighting fixtures aren’t just about making your home and garden look better on the outside; they have a number of practical, and security uses, too.

The front door is the perfect area to put outdoor wall lighting. Just think about it for a moment; you get home late at night, nobody else is up, and you’re struggling to find your keys, the lock, and, depending how good the night was, you may be having problems finding the actual door. If you have lights above the door, and they switch on automatically due to a motion sensor, then you can get back in without any problem, and not have to sleep on the doorstep, again.

These lights are also useful when other people come to the door. Have you ever had someone arrive at the door and you couldn’t quite see who they were? It can be a bit scary if that happens, and you’re the only one in the house; at least this way you’ll be able to see who’s standing at your front door.

Do you have areas at the back of your house, which could be accessible by passersby? If you do then you may want to consider using exterior lighting fixtures that are motion activated here, too. Most can be turned on normally, so they can be used if you want to be outside, and have more light, but they can also be used to scare off anyone who may try to gain access to your garden.

There are, of course, many other light fixtures that you could take into consideration, too, when thinking about ways of sprucing up the outside of your home.

If you want to take a grander approach to lighting the outdoor seating area, then why not put up some hanging lights? Some of these are so elaborate that you may feel you’ll have to hang a chandelier in the house, just so that it can compete.

If a touch of the old fashioned is more to your liking, and you have a path that needs to be illuminated, then some of the old-fashioned styled post lights may be right up your alley.
So, if you thought that exterior lighting fixtures were still in the dark ages, it’s time to think again, after all, doesn’t this shed a new light on things?
